Right Attitude Formula (TAP Series) Leadership Toolbox

The TAP Series is a curated set of leadership strategies and tools drawn from over 10 years of professional experience as a project manager, coach, psychotherapist, mentor, and trainer. It focuses on three key steps—Transform, Activate, and Progress—to help you shift your mindset, take inspired action, and evolve continuously. These principles, when integrated into any formula or approach, empower you to overcome challenges, resolve conflicts, and find greater clarity on your path forward.

The Right Attitude Formula is a handy framework you created to help students (and really anyone) remember how to approach interactions and attitudes positively—especially in a leadership or teamwork setting. It focuses on five “H” words, each capturing a key aspect of a great attitude. Here’s a breakdown of those five steps and why they matter:

1. Hello

  • Meaning: When introducing ourselves, we begin simply: greet the other person. Say “hello,” make eye contact, and briefly share who you are or the role you play. This acknowledges the other person and sets a friendly tone.
  • Why it Matters: A good greeting breaks the ice and shows respect. It’s an immediate signal to others that you value their presence.

2. Humble

  • Meaning: Even if you have a high-level title or significant responsibilities, approach others on level ground. Being humble means you neither see yourself as superior nor inferior. You recognize that everyone’s contribution is important.
  • Why it Matters: Humility fosters collaboration and mutual respect. By setting aside ego, you encourage others to open up and share their ideas freely.

3. Honest

  • Meaning: Authenticity and genuineness in your words, actions, and intentions. This includes being transparent about what you know and don’t know, and being true to yourself.
  • Why it Matters: Trust is foundational in teams and leadership. When people see that you are honest, they’re more likely to trust, respect, and follow you. Authenticity also helps build deeper connections.

4. Happiness (Choice)

  • Meaning: Recognize that your mindset is a choice. Life happens, but you always have a choice in how you react. Choosing positivity and focusing on the good side of situations can shape the overall experience for yourself and those around you.
  • Why it Matters: A positive outlook doesn’t deny difficulties; rather, it helps you stay solution-focused. Leading with optimism can boost morale, creativity, and resilience in challenging times.

5. Humor

  • Meaning: Remember to keep things light and fun when appropriate. A dash of humor eases tension, breaks barriers, and keeps morale high.
  • Why it Matters: Lightheartedness can diffuse stress and foster a friendly environment. Used skillfully and respectfully, humor is an excellent way to connect with people and maintain a positive group dynamic.

Putting It All Together

The Right Attitude Formula (“Hello, Humble, Honest, Happiness, and Humor”) is a simple "formula" for cultivating a respectful and uplifting environment—whether at work, school, or in personal relationships. By greeting others warmly, staying grounded, being genuine, choosing a positive perspective, and inviting a bit of levity, you set the stage for productive interactions and meaningful connections.

This five-part approach brings in an inclusive, engaging climate where everyone feels acknowledged and respected. It’s a powerful reminder that attitude is an active choice, and each “H” is a step toward building better relationships, teamwork, and leadership.
